Even though it’s technically still the spring season, the summer schedule is in full swing here now. And, by “schedule” I mean… we don’t have one. I’ve been in denial about this whole situation until this morning when I decided to drink an extra cup of coffee and fully embrace the fact that school in all its various forms is officially out for the next two months.
There may be very few down moments for things like writing or thinking. But, there are always pictures.
Last week I hauled us out to a strawberry patch to pick what little was left of the strawberry crop this spring. We were late to the game this season, so the only berries we could find were tiny. And, since the pickings were slim and we went in the heat of the day {and by heat I mean it maxed out at 75 degrees}, there was a chorus of complaining most of the time we were in the actual field. Things like, “Are we out in the country?”… “I see a bee! I see a bee!”… “My back is sore.”… “I’m hot.”…”I’m hungry.”… “I don’t have as many as she does!”… “She just ate a strawberry!” I feel like my grandfather the dairy farmer would be disappointed in our collective grit when it comes to things like working the fields. {See the above empty baskets}.
However, there was a slushy machine in the store at the entrance to the farm. And, it’s amazing how everyone came to life when they saw it. Did you know a slushy can alleviate back pain?
While I’m on the topic of working the fields… our yard is not really flourishing this spring because we haven’t kept it well watered. But, we have two “helpers” who are doing their part to beautify it.
One is three and obsessed with the water hose.
The other “helper” is eight months old, furry and obsessed with digging.
Rosie is also obsessed with any recreational equipment she can find in or near the yard or garage. She’s particularly fond of birdies.
And, she loves a good flip flop.
Though it may appear she is remorseful and has her head turned in shame, I assure you she was only momentarily distracted by something going on to her left. She probably saw a birdie.
The final picture from the past week is from the Kindergartener’s swim practice this morning. Technically the pool is closed to the public during swim team practice, so I don’t put everyone in swimsuits. But it was hot and I naively believed the Toddler when she said she could handle sitting on the side and dangling only her feet in the water. Within seconds of sitting, she stood up and walked down two steps fully clothed. Of course she did.
I know this sort of poolside behavior is not something to ignore. And, this would have undone the old me. But, the summertime me is trying to bring it down a few notches and remember that clothes will dry. It just makes the short ride home more complicated.
