These are two of my favorite conversations with the girls from the past week or so:
The other day we were driving home from school, and the Preschooler was growing very concerned about the weather and who or what causes the weather to do this or that. Snow was on her mind, and she was trying to figure out if we were going to get any or not. She’s in a phase right now where she often starts a question then gets distracted by another one of her thoughts and has to restart the original question.
The Preschooler: Mommy, does God… umm…
Me: Does he what?
The Preschooler: Momma, does God and… umm… what’s His son’s name again?
{Then, before I could get a word in, her sister jumped into the conversation from the backseat}
The Kindergartener {in her most appalled voice}: JESUS?? You mean JESUS??!! His son’s name is JE-SUS!!
Me: Yes, I think she means Jesus.
The Preschooler: Yeah, Jesus. Momma, does God and Jesus… do they make it snow?
I think a good answer to that is “yes.”
We have some work cut out for us in the way of names. I am glad, though, that we have the Father-Son relationship figured out. That seems like a real good starting place.
And, then there was my conversation with our oldest just before the second of her two front teeth fell out last week…
Me: This tooth is so loose! It will be out any day now.
The Kindergartener: Yeah, I know. But, I’m getting kind of tired of just getting money {for my teeth}. I’d like a real puppy or something. Maybe an iPad.
Me: Whoa, child! You’re about to lose a tooth. You didn’t win the lottery.
The Kindergartener: What’s the lottery?
See how complicated this gets? Moments like this convince me we’re failing as parents.
For the record, our Tooth Fairy will continue to leave quarters and $1 dollar bills only. Sprinkled with a little glitter on a good night…
