Suburban Shalom

seeking peace and purpose from my little neck of the suburbs

Fitness and fibbing

Like much of the rest of the world, I have a few resolutions or at least things I’d like to work on doing better this year. One of the areas I need improvement in is fitness. We froze our gym membership for the fall, but as of January 1st it is unfrozen and ready to be used in some form or fashion. I’m not convinced we actually need a gym membership, though, so I’m going to take this month to explore ways I could incorporate more fitness into my life from home and by going on regular walks/jogs around our neighborhood.

Over the weekend I read a convincing article about the benefits of circuit training sessions where you work out as hard and fast as you can, take a brief rest, and then move onto another exercise, all within a short amount of time. What I like about this plan is it seems like an attainable goal since it doesn’t require a two hour commitment. I know… no pain, no gain. And, you have to work hard at something to get anywhere. BUT, this is a start.

So, I decided this morning to give a brief circuit session a try. I started with jumping jacks, squats, and stair climbs. And, by the time I got to my fourth exercise I noticed a crowd had gathered in the kitchen.

Me: What are you doing with all these dolls?
The Preschooler: My babies wanted to watch you exercise.

I’m afraid this is indicative of how rare a sight this was. All we lacked was popcorn and candy for the audience. Clearly, I have work to do.

I also have some work to do on teaching the Preschooler about the importance of telling the truth. Yesterday she informed me in the car on the way home from school that her panties and pants were really wet “because it rained at her preschool.”

This story about an intense pop-up shower isolated only to the lower half of her body might have been believable had the skies not been crystal clear throughout our region the entire day.

“A” for creativity. “F” for honesty/believability.

She also told me in the car this morning that next year she wishes our family could dress up like the characters in the nativity story. She would be Jesus, naturally, since she is the smallest. The Spouse and I would be Mary and Joseph. The 1st Grader would be an angel. And, the 3rd Grader would be a donkey.
I feel certain the 3rd Grader is going to be very miffed about her assignment. I’m thinking shepherdess or even a lamb would be better. Luckily, since today is just Epiphany (or “A Tiffany” as the girls call it), she has a whole year to work on changing up the casting.
