When the Spouse mentioned that he had reason to be in Atlanta for business this week, the big girls and I jumped at the opportunity to tag along and make this into a mini-vacation of sorts. We like big cities.
So, here we are. And, we’ve packed a lot of activity into two days. We’ve done a children’s museum, Legoland, IKEA {an attraction in and of itself}, and a Braves game.
The Toddler asked us all day long yesterday, “What time does the football game start?… When are we going to the football game?” Finally, we had to break the news to her that the Braves are a baseball team. Then during the game the Preschooler asked me why the players had to wear “those big gloves” on their hands. Hopefully the people sitting on either side of us didn’t hear my running commentary with them because, clearly, we haven’t done a good job of educating the girls on the details of America’s favorite past time.
Despite our collective lack of expertise on the sport, the game was great entertainment.
A red cast makes for a perfect tomahawk.
The Preschooler savored her frozen strawberry lemonade for at least three innings.
I hadn’t been to a professional baseball game in years, and I had forgotten how fun they can be. I had also forgotten how young the players are! I remember going to a few Braves games back in the 90’s and seeing players like David Justice and John Smoltz play. At the time they seemed so old to me. But, last night they flashed the birthdate of each player up on the big screen as they came up to bat, and I think the average birth year was right around 1983. And, their biggest hitter… he was born in 1989. He’s a mere 22.
All of this would have been less concerning until my more youthful brother {who joined us for the game} informed me that Chipper Jones, the Braves most veteran player, was retiring after this season. So, I asked him how old Jones is, and he said, “I don’t know, but he’s old. He even looks old.” And, then he came up to bat and they flashed his ancient birthdate up on the screen: 1972. That’s right. He’s 40. He’s six years my senior. And, would you believe he can still run all the way around the bases?
Good grief.
Fortunately, we have the busy and ever-curious Baby C to keep us young for now…
And, while I’m certain she wouldn’t have liked a thing about this trip, we’ve missed her! But, she’s in the good company of the Spouses’ parents, and we even hear tale that she’s been sleeping through the night while we’ve been away. This is proof that she’s been playing mind games with us for months. Either that or she just enjoys having her grandparents to herself so much that she’s showing off.
