Ever since she first heard that this past Tuesday was going to be “Hat Day” at her school, the Preschooler had been stressed out about it. It was only after much coercion that I talked her into wearing her cowgirl hat for at least the first part of the morning.
I finally thought to ask her why she was so upset about wearing a hat, and she said in her most disgruntled voice through clenched teeth, “Be-cause. It messes up my hair.”
And, if I had ever been uncertain in the past, that is the moment when I knew for sure that she is flesh of my flesh. And, I applauded her for being such a good sport in spite of the tremendous risk a hat posed to both her hair and mood.
Meanwhile… the Baby has started a new thing at mealtimes. She’s always given us non-verbal cues to indicate that she’s finished with her meal; usually she starts throwing pieces of food in the floor. But, her latest cue she’s “over it and done with it” involves putting food in or near her head.
Note the spaghetti bowl. Subtle, yet effective.
Other times it might be pieces balanced on her head.
And, if things get really boring, there’s always the old hand in the yogurt trick.
This was a favorite ploy of her middle sister, and there’s nothing that frustrates me more than catching her as she takes her yogurt-covered hand and strokes it through her hair.
For this reason, she is only served yogurt at dinner, the last meal of the day. And, right now, I’d say we are still years away from public appearances in restaurants that have tablecloths or wine lists.
When she’s not busy eating or finishing up a meal, she enjoys unwinding with a cup of coffee {decaf, of course} and a few books…
As long as a tiara will suffice, I know someone who will be more than happy to participate in the preschool “Hat Day” in a few years.
