Yesterday I took the girls over to my mom’s house after preschool just to give them a change of scenery for the afternoon. And, as we were walking through the garage the Preschooler discovered a picture she had never seen before. I’m not quite sure where this came from or why Mom is storing it in her garage, but here it is:
The Preschooler: Mommy, what is this?
Me {distracted, as usual}: Umm… it’s a picture of the Lord’s Supper.
The Preschooler: Oh.
A few seconds later the Toddler jumps out of the car and has to examine the picture, too…
The Toddler {talking to her sister}: What is it?
The Preschooler {matter-of-factly}: It’s the Lord’s Sucker.
Normally I would just let a misunderstanding like this go. But, this one is kind of major. We’re talking about a sacrament here.
So, I had to intervene and straighten things up.
Me: Honey, it’s the Lord’s Supper.
The Preschooler: The Lord’s Sucker?
Me: No, supper. Sup-per. Like dinner. It’s the Lord’s Dinner.
The Preschooler: Oh, OK.
And, with that she was off to watch an episode of Umizoomi and work a Hello Kitty puzzle with the Toddler.
What I love most about this whole dialogue over the Lord’s Supper {or Dinner} is that both girls found it completely acceptable that they could be looking at a picture of Jesus enjoying a sucker at a table with all his friends. They like suckers, so why wouldn’t Jesus like them, too?
My guess is that he would have been a fan of suckers… and the kids who come up with these things.
Happy weekend!
