Suburban Shalom

seeking peace and purpose from my little neck of the suburbs

Smelling the roses…

I’ve decided that I take myself too seriously. I’m pretty sure the Spouse and others that know me well already decided that years ago, but I’m beginning to think they might be onto something. Generally, I over-think, over-analyze, and under-appreciate the opportunity to just relax and enjoy the moment. Way too often, I tend to view each day as something to be tackled {or survived} rather than as something to be enjoyed.

Fortunately, my children aren’t {yet} near so serious. They wake up asking “What are we going to do today?” with genuine excitement about what each hour holds. And, they find joy, real joy, in the simplest of things. Take the sprinklers, for example…

I’m pretty sure that it would never occur to me {even while complaining about the oppressive heat} to put my swimsuit on and run through the backyard sprinklers. Yet, they make it look so fun…
It’s even more fun if you put your foot on top of the sprinkler and make it spray directly toward your sister’s face…
Here’s a demonstration of the technique…
But, as it turns out, the sister likes water in her face.

Who needs a pool when you have some grass, a sprinkler, and a Dora kickboard…
Certainly not these two.

Maybe some of their unrestrained enthusiasm for the simpler things will rub off on me this summer.  Here’s hoping!
