I know summer isn’t officially over until September. But, since school has started back it feels like ours has come to a close. And, there are a few things I want to remember about this summer.
The 2nd Grader learned to dive. She conquered a few water-related fears and practiced jumping through hula hoops for the first part of the season. Then, last month she took her first headfirst plunge and loved it.
The Kindergartener thinks she also learned to dive. She yells, “Watch my dive! Watch my dive!” And, then she does this.
Please notice how close she gets to the edge of the pool. This is a pattern with her, and it’s very unnerving to witness in person. While she may misunderstand the term “dive,” she gets high scores for her low-splash entry.
The Toddler still hasn’t learned to swim. That’s going to require the help of a trained professional. For now, she prefers to be escorted around while she gives orders about where in the water she would like to go.
Her favorite destination is poolside when snacks are being served.
So she can’t really swim, but she did however learn to fly.
Truly, if energy and will could make a person fly, her feet would never touch the ground.
Also, this summer we have played endless hours of badminton, or “bad-mitten” as the Kindergartener calls it. Back in May she couldn’t hit the birdie at all. By the end of July, she was getting the hang of it. There were many angry outbursts and her racquet is warped due to a few racquet-throwing episodes. BUT, she can keep a rally going now.
Another summer first… the older two played their first official game of putt-putt.
After our badminton experience, I was afraid we might have a club thrower on our hands. But, surprisingly, the Kindergartener kept her cool the whole time.
The Toddler hasn’t learned any new sports, but she has enjoyed taking care of her {immodestly dressed} baby dolls. For whatever reason, the dolls are named Bob. All of them. And, they’re girls. Maybe it’s short for Roberta?? We have no idea, but at least it keeps things simple. She can ask me, “Where’s Bob?,” and I can grab the nearest baby doll and know that I’ve got the right one.
All in all it’s been a simple summer with lots of outdoor activities and a few new skills to show for it.
There were bumps and bruises…
There were days I wasn’t sure we were going to survive without school and preschool…
Which means there were some very ugly moments right alongside the happier times.
But, at the end of even the longest and/or hottest days, I’m thankful for my people and their passions. And, there is much passion/drama/intensity to be found around here.
So, while we still have a few more weeks of hot weather and summer nights, that’s a wrap on summer break 2014.
