Suburban Shalom

seeking peace and purpose from my little neck of the suburbs

Requests

This week has gotten ahead of me. Because now that it’s officially May, every end of school/preschool, Cinco de Mayo, spring fling, Mother’s Day, field day, open house, book fair, zoo day event is scheduled to take place sometime during the next two to three weeks. This would be fine, maybe even fun, except that I’m all “type-A-I-can-only-handle-one-event-at-a-time” frazzled about it.

Hence, not much blogging has been happening.

But, I did have a great conversation over lunch with the Preschooler concerning my wardrobe for the Mother’s Day Tea her class is going to be hosting:

Me: Hey, what would like me to wear for the tea?

The Preschooler {without batting an eye}: A zebra shirt.

Me: Oh, OK.

The Preschooler: But, not one with a tail on it.

I love that her instinctive response is “zebra shirt” as if it’s a go-to item in my closet. And, while the part about the tail may sound like a strange request, you should know that her younger sister regularly sports shirts with tails, and in fact, owns a zebra one. Like this:

So, you see, it’s a valid concern that I might try to wear a shirt with a tail. But, I promised the Preschooler that I would forgo a tail at the tea. I’m not saying I’m giving them up completely, but I won’t wear one that particular day.

On a much more serious note, I can’t write a post today without mentioning a prayer request for a baby who is undergoing major heart surgery possibly even as you’re reading this. I don’t know his family as well as many others in our community do, but his big brother and the Kindergartener became friends when they were in the same preschool class last year. His sweet mom is the type of person who radiates warmth and compassion from the moment you meet her. And, by the way she has candidly journaled her thoughts and prayers and struggles these past several months as they have loved this “warrior” baby as he is aptly called, it is evident that she has the type of faith that can move mountains. She and her family have already been found faithful, and I am moved to be more so myself just by following their journey. Today, though, they need no less than a miracle for their son, Drew. So, if you believe in the power of prayer, I ask that you whisper one for this child to live. Let’s add a few more voices to the tremendous throng of prayers being lifted up on this tiny warrior’s behalf.
