The Spouse and I don’t go to movies much these days. In fact, I think we might average about one a year {unless you factor in movies like Winnie the Pooh, and I don’t really think those 68 minutes of animation with little people on our lap making running commentary the whole time should count}. But, on Saturday night, we had the chance to go see a real movie in a real theatre downtown. So, after hearing loads of people rave about the book, I talked the Spouse into seeing The Help.
Hands down, it was one of the best films I have ever seen.
I’m not one to cry easily… generally, I’m immune to public displays of emotion in settings like a movie theatre. But, with this one, I couldn’t help it {no pun intended}. The actresses in the film who portray the maids {the help} in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960’s are so convincing, so endearing, so full of character… I think everyone in the theatre was moved in some way. From start to finish, the story line is written with a brilliant balance of humor and profundity. It was educational, it was engaging, and it was powerful. And, it made me think about everything from the way I want to treat those around me, to the way I want to raise my children, to the way I want to pursue justice and integrity in my spheres of influence {no matter how tiny} regardless of what society may be doing.
At its core, The Help is a story about courage. And, I think it’s one well worth seeing.
On a much lighter note, I also want to share two links to what might become a couple of my all-time favorite commercials. I have been a contact lens wearer since 7th grade, and I’m basically legally blind without corrective lenses of some sort. The Spouse, who still boasts near-perfect vision at age 32, finds this so intriguing. But, basically, if I need to get up in the middle of the night to get one of the girls or to go to the bathroom, I just follow the light. Maybe those of you who are also visually impaired can relate.
So, I leave you with these two commercials from Sears Optical…
And, the other favorite…
