Last week I discovered this drawing hanging in the hall at preschool and had to take a picture of it with my phone to show the Spouse. This is the Preschooler’s artistic interpretation of her family:
Here are my observations:
1) Daddy’s two fangs teeth are priceless. It appears that he’s the only one of the four of us to have teeth. {Still, I think I might choose no teeth over that pair}.
2) Daddy is also the only one to get a full set of very thick hair. This must have been drawn when the Spouse was overdue for a trip to Sports Clips. I’m envious of his incredible volume.
3) Speaking of hair… not to be confused with a jack-o-lantern, the Preschooler herself is sporting an interesting mohawk, ponytail, hair extension thing. I like how careful she was to get the shape just right.
4) Is it just me or do the Toddler and I bear a striking resemblance to puppy dogs?
5) While the Toddler has been known to do so on occasion, I don’t normally wear pigtails. But maybe if I let my hair grow out I could give that look a try by next spring…
6) Interestingly, the Preschooler is quite a bit larger than me. This says a lot about her view of the hierarchy of power in our family.
7) The TV must be very central to our family life given its prominent placement in the family picture. I guess when you don’t have a family pet, the television will have to do. {The teachers probably think this is all we do at home…}
Silly observations aside, I love this picture. It’s pretty fascinating and completely entertaining to watch a child this young learn to make sense of the world around them through art. And, while I can see all kinds of humor in it from my perspective, I want the Preschooler to know that I think this is a fabulous and cherished piece of work because it is her work.
I think the 4-year old class does one of these family portraits at the beginning of the year and then again at the end of the year to demonstrate how each child’s conceptualizations and skills have changed. So… I’m looking forward to seeing the debut of our new family member when they do their spring picture.
And, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t kind of hoping for a new hairstyle for myself and maybe some dentures for the Spouse…
