Yesterday morning we woke up with four people in our bed. This is not a normal occurrence these days because the Preschooler has pretty much mastered sleeping through the night in her own room. The Toddler, however, almost always arrives in our bed by early morning to catch one or two hours of sleep in between the Spouse and me. Maybe we should have enforced a “no child comes to our bed” policy a few years ago, but this is just our way of getting sleep… and it works. What doesn’t work well, is when we realize as we’re waking up that not one but two small people have wet soaked the bed. Or, as the Toddler puts it, “peeped” in the bed. Fun times. Three large loads of laundry later, our bed is back to normal again.
And, while I’m on the subject of “peeping,” I’m reminded of the fact that I really need to start potty-training the Toddler. {Insert sigh of dread here}. With the Preschooler, this was a super-easy feat. She was interested in learning, eager to be praised and rewarded for trying, and sailed through the process. But, then there’s the Toddler whose main two interests in the bathroom are still the toilet paper roll and the sink. We’re still doing this…
Sure, she shows a few signs of readiness, but I have my reservations about starting the process knowing what I know of this one’s personality and determination to do things her way… like repeatedly flush the toilet because it’s fun to watch the water swirl. Or, use the sink as a baby pool. Or, lock herself in the room. Or, remove pieces of my little bathroom decor and hide them in other areas of her choosing…
So, I think I’ll set my sights on the summer as our training season. That still gives me several weeks to get mentally geared up for the challenge. And, I think it’s going to take some serious gearing up…
