It occurred to me just this week how much the art and decor we surround ourselves with can influence our thinking. I like to have eye-catching reminders and sources of inspiration in different rooms of our home. For example, our playroom wall says, “Play” in big white letters. That’s just in case anyone tries to take him or herself too seriously in that room. Above my desk in our home office area a sign says, “Create.” So, that’s the general goal there. We have phrases in the girls’ rooms that serve to remind us (and them) that they are a gift from God. (This is a very important reminder in the midst of our bedtime battles). I don’t know if it’s a trend or what, but it seems like all sorts of signs and wall hangings with words and quotes and phrases are readily available out there these days.
Even though I have been intentional in my placement of many of these words and phrases, I have never really stopped to take notice of one such powerful sign in our kitchen until yesterday. There, in the middle of my mad rush to make muffins (out of a box, of course), I looked up and saw it:
The silver “believe” is really intended as a Christmas decoration. But, for whatever reason, I decided when I bought it a few seasons ago that I could just leave it out all year as a sort of inspirational message, if you will. I searched around for a flat and unassuming surface to place the piece on and somehow wound up settling on the back of our stove. Little did I think about how profound its placement would be. It’s perfect. I now have this constant, yet subtle reminder that anything is possible in the kitchen… if I’ll just believe. HA! It could only be better if the sign said, “I think I can, I think I can…”
So… What are your walls telling you?
