Suburban Shalom

seeking peace and purpose from my little neck of the suburbs

Mission (nearly!) aborted…

Well, I’m further along in my costume making attempt, and things are not really progressing as fast or as smoothly as I had hoped. Here’s where we are as of today:

Who knew that one needs a special type of scissors for cutting things like felt? Apparently they call them “fabric scissors,” and they are not particularly cheap. As you can maybe tell, I don’t own any and, consequently, my poodle skirt(s) currently look like something more along the lines of Wilma Flinstone than Olivia Newton John.

So, that’s how things are going on the sewing front. Party City’s costume aisle is looking better by the day.

I happen to be doing a study on the Proverbs 31 woman right now (aka “Superwoman”), and one of her many, many attributes is her ability to make all manner of things with her own hands. You know those overwhelming verses:

“She makes coverings for her bed…
…She makes linen garments and sells them.”

So, you see, I think that’s where my trouble started. I read this and got all overly ambitious, somehow forgetting along the way that I need not take this literally. I know it’s mere speculation, but maybe if the Proverbs 31 woman had lived in the age of retail stores, malls, and online shopping she would have had a different approach to covering her bed and clothing her family. I’m just saying, it’s possible.

So… If my mission to make this year’s Halloween costumes “with my own hands” does wind up being aborted, I’m going to comfort my undomestic self with this thought and just devote more energy to chasing after one of the other chapter 31 traits.  I’m sure the Spouse would be delighted to see me start by embracing verse 15: “She gets up while it is still dark.”

Happy weekend 🙂

Hollie, I hate to tell you but… I think the sewing gene skipped us :(. I was going to purchase a sewing machine so I can put on patches to Drake's RA vest. Well let's just say I have a talented friend that came to my rescue. Maybe one day we will figure out how to do these domestic duties that our grandmothers did so well.
PS I'm still working on the cooking thing.

Julie, I don't know how we missed the sewing/cooking genes…sometimes I feel like such a disappointment to our family! Surely they could make iron-on badges for things like RA's and Girl Scouts… 🙂

Amen to iron on badges! At least there are places to go out to eat so our poor families will not go hungry.
Everytime I cook Mac groans and says I guess I better call in a pizza. <3 Julie
