May madness

These past few weeks have been a whirlwind of end of the school year activities. Every time I think about sitting down to write a quick post, I remember I was supposed to send in juice boxes or fruit snacks for another party. There is so much festivity in May. And, so many snacks!

We kicked off the month’s activities a few weeks ago with a piano recital for the oldest two.

The 2nd Grader didn’t seem too worried about this whole recital thing and breezed right through the experience. The Kindergartener, though, stressed out about it for weeks, threatened to not attend, and refused to bow at the end of her song because “that would be embarrassing.” Bow or no bow, I thought they both did a great job for their first musical performances in front of an audience. To this day, I would prefer to be medicated before playing in front of strangers so I can empathize with their anxieties.

Another annual May activity and a first this year for the Kindergartener was Field Day at school.

It’s unfortunate there aren’t more college scholarships for sack racing and/or hula hooping because I think we would have some potential there.

We especially excel, though, at putting away some snow cones.

The Toddler didn’t have a Field Day at her school, but she doesn’t really require organized games to have a good time. All she needs is her scooter and an audience.

She did get to participate in a special first of her own this past weekend at her dance class recital. She’s been doing quite a bit of practicing at home, in outfits of her own choosing. She’ll do a move like this and then say, “Now you try it.” But, she is never pleased with my form.

After last week’s dance class I had good reason to be worried her weekend show might not go well, but she was surprisingly cooperative. She threatened to take her itchy tutu off in the beginning, but we convinced her from the sidelines that it would be best to leave it on for the performance.

At another point during the ballet segment she sat down for quite awhile to work on the little bow on her shoe that had come untied. But, she eventually rejoined the program and all in all, she seemed to have a great time dancing to “God Bless the USA” and “This Land is Your Land.”

I heard her humming the songs to herself this morning and noticed she thinks the lyrics are, “Disneyland is your land, Disneyland is my land.”
I guess that’s just as true, so I’ll leave that one alone for now.
