The Kindergartener started the day off yesterday by asking me, “What are we gonna do special for Mark and Luther King Day?”
I confess. The Spouse had already left for work, and I didn’t have any special plans in mind for “Mark and Luther” Day. But, I told her we would try to make it a fun day anyway.
Now that she’s starting to read, she was more than eager to help write up a grocery list. I told her just to sound out the words and make a list of things she thought we should get at the store. So, she produced this:
While I’m not sure lipstick would be considered a grocery item, who can argue with its importance? I’m so glad it made the list. And, I’m going to blame the Chick-fil-a cows and their ridiculous billboards for the minor misspelling of chicken.
Later in the day I remembered a little art activity I had seen on Pinterest that I thought the oldest two might enjoy. It’s rare that I would actually do something I have seen or pinned on Pinterest, but this one was super simple. I just put a layer of baking soda in two Pyrex dishes, mixed up some food coloring and vinegar, and let the girls use medicine droppers to “color” the powder. The Preschooler, forever my cautious one, asked me while I was getting it ready, “Are you gonna cause an explosion?”
As if any of our crafts have ever ended in disaster?? Clearly, she has trust issues.
Once I assured her there wouldn’t be any explosions, only small fizzing, she dove right in:
There are many things I don’t understand about my children. One such mystery is why they consistently choose to don swimsuits in the dead of winter, just for fun. I asked the Kindergartener what had prompted her to change into swimwear, and she replied, “It’s just so much more comfortable this way.” I couldn’t disagree more. But, hey, to each her own.
Oh, to bottle up that kind of carefree self-confidence.
