These are just a few things I don’t understand…
Why this child will sit in her chair, but only if it’s upside down.
Why she doesn’t like to wear a coat outside, but happily sports a scarf around the house all afternoon.
Why she likes to add an element of height {and just a touch of danger} to everything she does.
Why she has no interest in puzzles, until someone else is trying to put one together.
And, another mystery… why children say certain things.
{The scene: a department store dressing room where the Kindergartener had grown very impatient with shopping}
Me: We’re almost ready to go. I just have to find a clerk and pay for this.
The Kindergartener {talking loudly}: Can we just steal it?
My. Word. I am failing as a parent. I know she had reached her breaking point. But, I’m still saddened that shoplifting was the best solution to her problem she could come up with in the moment. She was almost smiling when she said it as if she knew she would get a rise out of me, but we still had a big discussion about why stealing is never an option. We also left the store quickly before someone in the dressing room had the chance to call security.
