I’m having a hard time staying up late enough to write blog posts lately, and I’ve concluded that it’s all because kindergarten is getting the best of me. It’s hard to get up so early in the morning. It’s hard to learn this fancy new way of writing letters that look halfway cursive. It’s hard to memorize “our” sight words. And, it’s especially hard to help with kindergarten craft projects.
Over the weekend I got an email asking if any of the parents would be able to send in dyed pasta for the class to use to make a jewelry craft this week. I thought this sounded super easy, so I volunteered myself to make blue elbow macaroni. After all, the instructions were simple: put the pasta of your choice in a jar, add a small amount of rubbing alcohol and a few drops of food coloring, and there you would {supposedly} have it: beautifully colored pasta.
Well, here is what happens when you follow those instructions using elbow macaroni and a few drops of blue food coloring:
Aren’t they lovely? I’m sure everyone would enjoy adorning their necklaces with tiny black worms.
Fortunately, Mimi was helping with this particular project, so she ran to the store to get a different type of pasta and food coloring to see if we could create something that more closely resembled a primary color. After consulting a dear friend/elementary school teacher for advice AND trying three different types of pasta with neon food coloring, the second round turned out much better:
I still hold that it’s impossible to create blue pasta because you’ll see that blue food coloring turns the yellow-tinted pasta a nice shade of green. And, that pasta on the left was supposed to be pink. Who knew this would be so involved?
In other kindergarten news… I confessed last week that I could never homeschool or be a good elementary teacher because I lack the patience necessary to do so. Well, you might remember that we worked so hard on learning one particular word, “the.” And, yet, when the Kindergartener was tested on her sight words last week, guess which word{s} she struggled with??
“The”?? What in “the” world? She knows this! She knows this, I tell you. I think I stress the Kindergartener out. Clearly, I’m a failure as a teacher. At least she knows her “mother”…
On a totally different tangent, we are loving the fall weather. The girls can’t get enough of the outdoors, especially the Baby who has become obsessed with going “bye-bye.”
She’s determined to reach the doorknob, and I’m afraid she’ll devise some way to do so soon. She’s still safest when she’s completely confined in something like the carseat, or her favorite, the swing:
It’s pretty rare that I find something that simultaneously entertains all three girls, but the swing set keeps everyone occupied…
… At least until the Kindergartener starts practicing her circus stunts. And, speaking of the circus… I’ve been trying to come up with a solution for the Baby’s wild mane.
The Spouse says this is unacceptable. But, there are very few seasons in one’s life when she can get away with a Pebbles Flintstone hairdo. And, I think for the Baby, that time is now.
