In anticipation of the holiday, I asked the girls to tell me what they are thankful for this year. I think their answers are pretty much on cue with their personalities.
The Kindergartener {without skipping a beat}: I’m thankful for Momma, Daddy, God, and Jesus dying on the cross.
That’s the way a true firstborn answers a question such as this. She knows how to pull out a Sunday School answer when she needs one, and she covered all the bases {except the obvious omission of her sisters, but we’ll just overlook that for now}.
And, then I asked my middle child…
The Preschooler: I’m thankful for nothing.
Me: Surely you’re thankful for something.
The Preschooler: I’m thankful for fruit snacks.
I appreciate her honesty. With this child, there’s no pretense. She’ll tell you exactly what she thinks. And, right now her understanding of gratitude is limited to the tangible, if not the edible. That’s OK. I may add some fruit snacks to the Thanksgiving meal just for her.
And, then there’s the Baby who can’t yet tell us what she’s thankful for, but who can tell us what she thinks about this centerpiece. And, she thinks it’s a giant “doggie”…
At this point, she classifies all animals as “doggies.” But, the Spouse has been working with her, and she can now almost say “tur-KEY.” We just don’t want there to be any confusion about the type of meat we eat around here.
So, from our turkey{s} to yours…
