Dear Kindergartener,
Though I can scarcely believe it, you are six years old today!
You’re disappointed that you still don’t have any loose teeth to show for this important birthday, but I’ve assured you that day will come soon enough. And, until then, it’s easier to eat cake and sing “Happy Birthday” with all of your teeth in anyway.
You’ve grown up so much over the past year… maturing in many ways, yet maintaining the innocence and insatiable curiosity that makes you special. You still ask great questions like, “How deep is the ocean?” or… “Why do you have that mole on your face?”… Questions that require some deep thought to think up and are often impossible to answer to your satisfaction. In the way of conversation, you certainly know how to keep us on our toes.
Me: I need to get in shape.
Her: Which shape do you want to be?
{I think that’s a valid concern}.
You are serious and thoughtful.
Her: Did Jesus have special powers?
Me: Yes.
Her: Why did he have special powers?
Me: Because God gave them to him.
Her: Well… that was nice.
Other times you’re a bit manipulative.
Her: Sarah is beautiful.
Me: Yes, she is. And, so are you.
Her: Well, she wears eyeshadow.
And, speaking of eyeshadow. You’re a huge fan. You love make-up, dress-up, puzzles, Barbies, Lego Friends, and most all things girly.
You’re also passionate about putting things together and understanding how things work, so you don’t mind at all to play Transformers and pirate ships with the boys or to get dirty working with your hands outside.
When you get frustrated, though, you have your mother’s temper. And you need answers to your questions… RIGHT NOW.
You love fairy tales and magic tricks, bedtime stories and Disney movies. And, your vivid imagination is one of my favorite things about you.
You teach me to love more thoughtfully with your sincere concern about everything from the babysitter’s allergies to your sister’s dangerous obsession with the holly berries. And, you teach me to slow down long enough to wonder and marvel at the things around me with your questions.
Happy 6th birthday, Kindergartener! I love you to the moon and back!
{And, before you even ask… I have no idea how far away the moon is from the earth. I just know it’s very, very far away!}
