In recent months the Preschooler and the Toddler have been showing a lot of interest in learning to play games. Card games, board games, word games… basically, they just like to compete.
The Toddler is presently obsessed with Hungry Hippos. Sadly, though, she usually has to play it by herself because things turn ugly if her beloved game doesn’t go her way. We’re trying to teach her that it’s not appropriate to yell “You stupid head!” any time one of her opponents gets more “food” for their hippo than she gets for hers. Competition is a hard concept when you’re three.
The Preschooler is especially into card games. We don’t have the original Memory cards, but we do have these Boz character cards that have matching pairs.
I remember playing memory games with the kids I babysat when I was in high school. And, I also remember acting like I couldn’t remember where the matching cards were so they could “win” the game. Well, I’ve discovered that I no longer have to act like I don’t remember where the matches are only because… I really can’t remember. {In defense of my memory, my mini opponents do tend to move the cards all around throughout the game which adds a new degree of challenge to it. But, still, I feel like it shouldn’t be that hard to find the match to “Grumpy B” as the Toddler calls him…}
