Forty-eight hours {18 of those in the car}…

This weekend we made a whirlwind trip to Indiana for a wedding. We knew from the get-go that this would be a fairly long car trip that we estimated would take us about 7 hours. What we didn’t know is that an intense rain storm would hit Lexington, Kentucky, right before we arrived there and would cause 30 wrecks in one hour which, in turn, would close down a 5-mile stretch of very important interstate at rush hour on Friday. After pondering our options for nearly an hour while we sat at a complete standstill at mile marker #111, we decided on a {very rural} alternate route that would at least get us moving again. So, we boldly and bravely plowed our minivan through the median and onto greener pastures. Literally.

Despite the fact that this detour was unplanned and incredibly frustrating, I have to say it was scenic…

The Kentucky bluegrass {miles and miles of it} with its well-kept fences and stately farmhouses is pretty impressive.
What was unimpressive was our actual time of arrival at our destination Friday evening some 11.75 hours after we left home. You can imagine how cheery we all were when we got to the hotel. The Toddler was so wound up that she had to sing herself to sleep at midnight with a medley of Down by the Station, Do Lord, and Yes, Jesus Loves Me. As I laid there in the dark, I was just about to feel a sense of pride in the sweetness of her song selection until she got to this line…
“Yes, Jesus loves poopie. Yes, Jesus loves poopie.”
I’ll chalk that up to what could only be described as delirium.
The wedding on Saturday, though, redeemed all of our travel woes. The bride was beautiful, the ceremony was sweet, and the church was equipped with a glass, sound-proof room in the back where the Toddler {and others with short attention spans} could squirm, dance, yell, etc. all without making a scene. I think every church should have a glass room. Really, I wouldn’t mind having one here at home for occasional use, either…
And, then, the reception was icing on the cake {no pun intended} because they had set up a special craft table for the kids AND a milk and cookies table. Visiting this table and using the decorative straws to blow bubbles in her milk, of course, was a highlight of the Toddler’s young life…

She’s still talking about the milk and cookies two days later. The Preschooler was pretty excited, too, about the food and drink options at her fingertips…

So, after an afternoon of fun at the wedding and later at the hotel pool with our cousins, the girls were well fed and well entertained.

Fortunately, our return trip home yesterday went much smoother, and we actually made the trip back in 7 hours as hoped. I’ve now memorized large chunks of Thumbelina {a.k.a. Bumble-ina} and have seen at least 16 different episodes of Curious George, but once again, the DVD player’s value cannot be overestimated on trips of this nature.

One would think that after all that time in the car the girls would have been ready to run around outside or otherwise get out some energy when we got home. But, instead, the Preschooler told me she needed to “check something on Facebook” last night:

It’s hard to keep up with the demands of social media when you’ve been traveling…
