Suburban Shalom

seeking peace and purpose from my little neck of the suburbs

Change your tune…

There’s not much that gets by a three-year old. Especially when you’re in a car with one. Mine, at least, is curious, inquisitive, and ever-observant… which can all be very frightening.

So, yesterday afternoon I was in a good mood and was humming a little song in the car, and this was the dialogue that unfolded with said 3-year old:

Toddler 1: Mommy, is that a church song or something?

Me: Yes, it’s a song we sang in church this morning.

Toddler 1: Well… I don’t really think you need to be singing that right now because it’s not church time anymore.

Alrighty, then. What can you say to that? Either I’m a terrible hummer or I’m raising my children to lead very compartmentalized lives.

Of course I could/should have launched into a big explanation about how you can sing church songs any time of the day just like you can sing school songs (like our personal favorite, “5 Little Monkeys”) any time of the day. But, I was tired and that would have taken lots of energy to explain. So,… I just changed my tune. And, we went on our merry way singing Sunday afternoon songs since it was, after all, Sunday afternoon.

I’m not sure what we’ll be humming or singing in the car today that will qualify as a weekday song, but we may have to get creative. Because heaven forbid we sing church songs on a Monday 😉

“Sing God a brand new song! Earth and everyone in it, sing!”

(Psalm 96:1, MSG)
