Over the weekend we made our usual trip to Lowe’s to get a few supplies for some around-the-house improvement projects. I realize Lowe’s is not a very exciting place for kids. But, the girls were entertained for a good twenty minutes playing with the bins of cabinet knobs and pulls on the hardware aisle while the Spouse and I labored over a decision about door knobs. We eventually made up our minds, went through the check-out line with our purchases, and headed onto our next destination.
About an hour later when we were settling back in at home the Spouse noticed an area of the Toddler’s denim shorts was protruding. So, he asked her, “What’s in your pocket?” And with that she pulled out an oil-rubbed bronze cabinet knob that she had stored away for later. Immediately the other two girls were horrified.
“Did she steal it?? She stealed it!!”
“Will she have to go to jail??”
“Will you have to go to jail??”
We reassured them that though it was definitely wrong for her to take the knob, it was unlikely that anyone would be going to jail for this accidental offense. We would, however, be making a trip back to Lowe’s where she would be surrendering the “borrowed” knob.
So, on our drive to the store I gave her my talk on how we don’t take things that aren’t ours or things we haven’t paid for at the register. And, we made our way back to the hardware aisle to deposit the knob into its proper bin.
While we have taken care of the situation, don’t be surprised if you see this on the door of your local Lowe’s or Home Depot store:
Often uses a pink/purple trike as a getaway vehicle. May be found wearing large, dark sunglasses to hide her face. {** Pink shoes light up when she walks/runs, which may be helpful if suspect is spotted after dark}
Suspect may act confused and maintain innocence upon charges of misbehavior, but can often be bribed to come clean with the promise of M&M’s or a lollipop.
