I thought it would be fun for the Preschooler to start taking tennis lessons this summer. So, on Monday afternoons we trek to the other side of town for a 4-6 year old “Mighty Mites” clinic. Part of the reason I thought this would be a good summer activity is because I knew the tennis center had indoor courts. So, I envisioned sitting in the comfortable air-conditioned spectator area with the Toddler while we leisurely watched the Preschooler learn to hit an extra-large tennis ball over a miniature net. Somehow I had blocked from my memory that the tennis centers’ courts are neither cooled nor heated… which means that heat gets trapped in the building and the atmosphere inside the indoor court area during July can best be described as a sauna.
I’m always concerned when the weekly forecast calls for a “warming trend.” This was last Monday’s temperature {according to our car} at 4:30 PM:
To be fair, this represents the heat index rather than the actual temperature. But really, once you reach 95 degrees and factor in some southern humidity, I think it all feels about the same.
Thanks to a tip from one of the other moms, the Toddler and I have found a special retreat during the lessons… the women’s locker room/lounge… where the air conditioning flows and the seats {with backs} abound. So, there, amidst lockers, towels, and tennis rosters, we sit…
Clearly, the heat is getting to all of us…
