I’m not a morning person. I so want to be one. I really do. I believe there’s something sacred about the early morning hours when the world is still quiet, the air is still cool and the day is still a blank canvas of opportunity and promise. The problem is just that my room is still dark and the bed is still warm. And, I don’t have chipper genes. I’m forever indebted to coffee for making me functional and mostly tolerable during the morning hours.
All this to say, school started today. And, it’s going to take a few days to get back into the swing of things for this crew. Naturally, the Toddler slept in longer than she has all summer this morning. So, only the oldest two were up {with nervous excitement} and ready to take on the day.
They’re headed off to face the first and third grades, which seems near impossible…
The 3rd Grader is a little worried about the increased amount of homework and all the new multiplication facts she’ll be learning. The 1st Grader is mainly concerned about what her snack and lunch options are looking like this year. Oh, birth order, how you never fail to amuse me.
So, it looks like I’ll be the Toddler’s primary playmate for the majority of the day now. This is no easy task. No amount of coffee can really prepare one for her kind of energy… and attitude. She’s mad at me already. And, yes, she wears toboggans and gloves {and sometimes fur boas} in August.
There is such a frantic pace {and too often a hateful atmosphere} to our school mornings, and I want to have a verse I intentionally pray over the girls each morning this year. This way, if I’ve botched the start of their day with my tone or impatience over lost shoes and spilled milk, at least they will have heard the promise of these words somewhere amidst their morning. So, I’m writing this on an index card and putting it in the front of the car as a prayer to pray over them before drop off.
And may I remember to really pray this every morning, believing that those very words have power, and not just write about doing so here.
No matter the school or the city, may God bless the beginning of a new school year for all of our kids and their teachers.
