Yesterday I was driving the girls to their summer preschool when we approached a yellow traffic light that I went sailing through. We had overslept and were running late, and I’ll confess that I didn’t want to sit through yet another light. So, it’s possible that I even sped up to avoid doing so.
The problem is, I have two backseat drivers who are very interested in learning traffic rules. And, I was busted.
The Preschooler: Yellow means s-l-o-w down.
Me: Yes, it does.
The Preschooler: Momma, did you s-l-o-w down?
Me: Umm, I did not.
The Preschooler: But, yellow means s-l-o-w down.
Me: Yes, that’s true.
The Preschooler: Is a police gonna get you?
Me {looking to make sure she’s not actually seeing a police car nearby}: I don’t think so.
The Preschooler: Are you gonna go to jail?
Me: Let’s hope not.
And, for the rest of the drive to the church I was engaged in a very serious conversation about what types of crimes result in jail time, how the police transport people to jail, what kind of “bad guys” go to jail, etc., etc.
In hindsight, I think maybe I should have just s-l-o-w-e-d down and sat through the light. My backseat drivers are keeping me honest.
