This week the Kindergartener had the opportunity to participate in a K-5 talent show at church. I assumed she might be intimidated by the older kids and opt just to watch the show. But, surprisingly, she remembered she does have a little-known talent and jumped at the chance to demonstrate it.
We first discovered her affinity for “hooping” when she was 4. Since the Spouse can’t do it to save his life, I like to take credit for passing the skill onto her. In fact, I asked her if she would like me to join her on stage so we could perform together. But, she insisted, “That would be s-o-o-o embarrassing.” You can imagine how crushed I was to be unwelcome on the stage.
So, we found a song appropriately called “The Hula Hoop” song, and off she went with only her hoop and a CD.
I took this video of one of her practice rounds. She has sort of a dancing jive thing going on when she gets into it. She also thinks she’s hilarious. So, I realize it may not be a talent you’ll see on Miss America, but I’m still pretty proud.
As a side note: if you’re looking for some spring break entertainment, I challenge you to find a hula hoop and give it a whirl. You might need to download your own hula hoop song from Itunes for extra inspiration. Unlike bike-riding, it’s not one of those skills that just comes back to you real naturally, especially if it’s been more than ten years since you last picked one up. It’s most fun if you have an audience. And, I dare you to try to do it without laughing.
