A wedding {of sorts} and a few portraits

Last week the 1st Grader had an exciting week at school. It was spirit week, so there were several days where they got to dress up. But, the highlight of the week was Friday when the letters “Q” and “U” got married. When I was in school we didn’t have events of this sort, so I had to learn all about this, too. But, the reason “Q” and “U” got married is because in English-derived words, “U” is almost always the only vowel that can follow “Q.” If you’re like the Spouse, you’re going to try and disprove this immediately. But, I’m telling you it’s true.

quick, quiet, quandary, quack, quip, quasi, quintessential, quiver, quarrel, and so forth and so on…
Sure, there’s “qwerty” and words that are borrowed from other languages. But, this “Q-U” thing seems to hold true for English words.
Anyway, the marriage of the letters {which were actually puppets on a stick} was performed by the principal in a ceremony. The kids sat in rows just like they would at a real wedding. The video footage is hilarious because she reads them their vows in complete seriousness. “Q, do you take U to be your vowel for life? In quarrels and in health, in spelling and in reading…”
The high point for the 1st Grader, of course, was that following the nuptials they had cupcakes to celebrate.
Who wouldn’t want to be a 1st Grader?

The Preschooler has been begging to do some sort of dance class again this fall. She participated in one last winter/spring that she enjoyed, so I finally signed her up for the same little class this season. As the youngest, her life primarily consists of hauling her older sisters to various activities, so I’m hoping this can be her “thing.”
In typical fashion, we weren’t fully prepared for her first class on Friday. So, just before time to leave we went on a mad search for her tap shoes. In the end, we could only find one. This is her helping me look for the missing shoe… using binoculars… backwards.

And, this is why we never found the missing shoe. It’s a wonder we ever find anything, honestly, because this is the kind of help I’m working with around here.

When they’re not fighting, {which is most of the time these days if all three are home at the same time}, the girls like to draw pictures and compare their artwork. Over the weekend the 3rd Grader, who is really into drawing people wearing a lot of makeup, drew this:

And, this was our conversation:

Me: Oh, wow. I like her. I think you accidentally drew Cher!
Her: You think it looks like a chair?!
Me: No, no, no. It looks a lot like CHER, she’s a famous singer from a long time ago who really liked eye shadow.

And, with that, she was beyond proud of herself for unknowingly doing a celebrity portrait.

Meanwhile, this is the picture the Preschooler drew:

Me: Oh, I like it. Who is it supposed to be?
Her: It’s you.
Me: Oh, OK. So, is that you on my arm?
Her: Nope. It’s a big bug.

Please know that if a bug that size ever lands on my arm, the next picture of me will need to be of a person laid flat out on the ground because I will have passed out and/or died on the spot.

Her imagination is bigger than mine, for sure.
