While most people may be discussing politics and talking about the big election today, we’ve got more important subjects being discussed at our place. 437 more important subjects, to be specific.
The Preschooler is in the throes of that stage most all children must go through where she has an insatiable curiosity about… everything. And, she’s not into asking easy, mindless questions. She likes to go deep. Today on the way to preschool the topic on her mind was The Three Little Pigs:
The Preschooler: Momma, why does the big bad wolf like to eat little pigs?
Me {trying to drive in the rain}: Umm, I’m not sure.
The Preschooler: Does he cook them before he eats them?
Me: Uh, yes. I would think so….
The Prechooler: Do little pigs taste like ham?
Me: Umm, probably. Yeah, I bet they taste like ham.
The Preschooler: Does he put salt on them?
Me: Honey, I have no idea. But, yes, he might put salt on them.
Keep in mind that this whole conversation was happening before I had even had a cup of coffee.
And, another of her favorite early morning car topics concerns my wedding.
The Preschooler: Why did you marry daddy?
Me: Because I love him.
The Preschooler: Where was I when you got married?
Me: Well, you hadn’t been born yet.
The Preschooler: Why not?
Me: Umm, because we weren’t ready for you yet. {Truly. We were not ready}.
The Preschooler: Was I still in heaven?
Me: Uh, yes. Yes, that’s probably where you were. You were waiting with God until it was time for you to be born.
The Preschooler: Do I have to get married?
Me: Well, you don’t have to get married. But, when you’re older you may meet someone special and decide you want to marry him.
The Preschooler: Why do married people kiss?
Me: That’s just what they do. {I know… terrible answer on my part}.
The Preschooler: I don’t want to get married…. no. That’s gross.
OK. And, with that we moved onto the next topic… “Why do the leaves have colors?”
I’ll either become way smarter by thinking through all these questions, or I’ll lose my mind. Let’s hope for the former.
And, let’s hope I savor the sweet innocence of these 437+ car-ride questions before I blink and these girls turn into teenagers and I can’t get them to look up from their smartphones long enough to even have a conversation with me.
Lord, help me be here today. Fully here. Coffee or not, don’t let me miss these opportunities to love these little people well. Full of personality, full of wants and wills, full of questions… many of which I have no idea how to answer. Help me listen better and love better, even when I’m tired. Help me see through the sparkly pink sunglasses into a little heart that just wants to know how, when, and why because it helps her understand her world. Give me patience. Give me wisdom. And, if there’s any left over, give me a touch of that same curiosity about the great big world around me.
